Profile

I’m Ilene Strong, a retired Alpine School District administrator and teacher with years of experience helping students succeed in Utah’s public schools. My goal is for students to feel happy and safe at school while thriving academically and socially. I am committed to transparency and collaboration in working with parents, staff, and fellow board members to achieve that goal.

I am focused on creating a district that is the envy of others. My top priority is ensuring every student has a successful, high-quality educational experience. My favorite motto—“children have only one childhood”—serves as a constant reminder of the importance of viewing the educational experience through the eyes of a child. I will put students first by attracting qualified and talented staff members who enjoy competitive salaries, strong benefits, and programs of support.

Having led an elementary school of over 1,200 students, I bring firsthand insight into the challenges of overcrowding and the urgent need to plan for growth.

I am married, have four children, and enjoy fourteen grandchildren. My personal experiences as a student, involved mother, and successful educator make me the best fit to represent District 4 on the Lake Mountain School Board.

Swearing In

June 2, 2025 I signed up to run for District 4 of the Lake Mountain District School Board Race.  I was required to raise my right hand and attest to the following:

-I have resided in District 4 of the Lake Mountain School District for the 12 consecutive months immediately before the date of the election.

-I am non-partisan.

-I have paid the $50 filing fee.

-I am not convicted of a felony, treason, crime, or offense relating to elections.

-I have not been declared mentally incompetent.

All About Me

I was born and raised in Mesa, Arizona attending Mesa Public Schools and graduating from Westwood High School. I attended  Brigham Young University for a year before meeting and marrying Greg Strong. We have been married 45 years, of which the last 15 years we have resided in Eagle Mountain, Utah. We have four children and 14 grandchildren.

I was a stay-at-home mom for the first 20 years of our marriage involved in the schools my children attended.  I volunteered in the classroom, and participated in the parent organization that planned many events and fundraisers at the school.

During the next seven years I worked in a commercial construction office as the Human Resource Director understanding the importance of budgets, laws, and deadlines. During this time I continued my education and eventually graduated from Brigham Young University with a Bachelor of General Studies degree with a Family Life emphasis.

Over the next sixteen years I was employed in the education field in Alpine School District. I received a teaching certificate from the Utah State office of Education through the Alternative Route to Licensure program.  I taught first and fifth grades before returning back to school.  In 2012, I graduated from Brigham Young University with a master’s degree in Educational Leadership. Returning to Alpine School District I was assigned a Teacher on Special Assignment (TSA) position working as an assistant principal at two elementary schools.  I was then assigned as Principal of Traverse Mountain Elementary in Lehi for nine years, and transferred to Thunder Ridge Elementary in Saratoga Springs for one year before retiring on September 1, 2023.  During my time in Alpine School District, I was elected Mentor Principal of the year by my elementary administrative colleagues; and as a teacher I was awarded both the Spirit of Alpine Award and Commitment to Students Award.  Currently I volunteer with the Utah Education Initiative, an organization that assists adults in gaining higher education through Utah universities and trade schools.
