The Extra Curricular

Last week I attended my grandson's choir concert and was once again reminded of the vital role our extra curricular subjects are in our schools, whether it be the arts, music, sports, CTE, coding, robotics, language, library, and others.  In every case there are talented instructors, teachers, coaches and adults with passion for their chosen field. When I grew up I was involved with and enjoyed music, CTE and sports. I could say these extra curricular subjects were the reason I couldn't wait to go to school.  As a school board member I will be a strong supporter of the extra curricular in our schools.  It made all the difference in my own life, and I want to maintain that rich experience for our students in the new Lake Mountain School District.

Thanks For the Kinds Words

As an Alpine school board member who worked with Ilene for several years, I can confidently say she is exceptional.  She led a school of over 1200 students with the expertise, vision, and adaptability needed to help both students and teachers thrive.  This is exactly the kind of leadership the fast-growing Lake Mountain School District needs.

Ilene has an unmatched ability to stay focused, build capacity, hold people accountable, and lead with genuine care.  She is the steady capable anchor Lake Mountain School District needs for a STRONG start and lasting success.

Thanks for the Vote of Confidence

You go girl!! You are one of the smartest humans I know! You bring so many perspectives to the table. I learned so much from you when we worked together.

Westlake FFA School Farm

You may have wondered what the neat and orderly bales of hay on the curb by Vista Heights Middle School were all about.  Today I had the opportunity to tour and experience the Westlake FFA School Farm under the direction of Director Michael Gowen at the Farm Field Days event.  I drive past the farm everyday and have never stopped to take it all in. One of my favorite things about the farm is seeing the high school students walk the lambs on a leash as if they were walking a dog.  The students work and take classes all year in order to keep the farm running.  CTE in our new district will be something I strongly support.

Most Sought After Seat 4 Endorsement

I am honored to announce that Ben Perez, a Seat 4 candidate who is not moving forward in the general election in November, has chosen to endorse me!  I am grateful to have met Ben during this election process.  He is professional, forward thinking, and passionate about the success of our new school district.  I hope all who voted for Ben  during the primary election will consider voting for me in November.

Ben Perez Endorsement:

Although I am no longer in the running for School Board, I am proud to endorse Ilene Strong.

I’ve taken the time to meet with Ilene, and I found that our vision and desires for the future of our new school district are aligned. Ilene is a calm, level-headed, even-tempered leader who treats frustrated parents and tough situations with respect and care. That temperament, paired with her habit of listening first, will serve our community well.

Ilene’s background as a teacher, assistant principal, and elementary school principal, including leading a campus of over 1,200 students, means she brings hands-on expertise about what it takes to make schools successful. She has dealt with overcrowding, understands the urgency of planning for growth, and knows how to hit the ground running as our new district is established. She also recognizes that the success of our students today will shape the strength of our economy, the health of our society, and the opportunities for future generations.

Though retired, Ilene remains deeply invested in our community. She is committed to transparency, collaboration, and putting students first by attracting great educators, supporting them with strong benefits, and creating schools where children are safe, happy, and thriving. Above all, she is a fantastic listener who takes the time to understand concerns and find solutions.

I invite my supporters to meet Ilene and see for yourselves. Reach out to me or to Ilene directly if you have any questions, want a yard sign, or simply want to share ideas. Let’s come together to support Ilene Strong during the general election and build a district we can all be proud of.

Honk When You See My Sign

A huge shout out to my husband Greg Strong for supporting me in many, many ways, especially in taking on the project to install a banner/sign on Pony Express Parkway next to the Silver Lake Amphitheater.

And for neighbors Nathan Horrocks and Daniel Vogt who  provided manpower to make this project a success. Hooray for family and friends who graciously give of their time.  Look for my sign next time you are driving on Pony Express Parkway near the Silver Lake Amphitheater.

Two Grandsons,

Two Consecutive Days,

Two Different States

So proud of my two grandsons who graduated from high school last May just one day apart. Taylor Gabbitas from Salem Hills High School in Salem, Utah, and Caleb Chatterton from independence High School in Spring Hill, Tennessee. That made for a quick plane ride across the country.

MY Why

This is what education is all about, getting students successfully to the high school finish line of graduation, and off to adulthood. I believe education is all about the students and how the adults who surround them can be supported in helping them succeed into adulthood.

I am running for school board, so I can assist in building the best school district that helps families and parents get their children successfully to the high school finish line of graduation.

What An Honor

Three months ago when I started this journey to run for school board in the new Lake Mountain School District, I didn't realize it would include a certificate of nomination to appear on the ballot in the 2025 general election on November 4.  What an honor to to be among so many outstanding candidates.

I am a STRONG advocate for students.  My goal is for students to feel happy and safe at school while thriving academically and socially. I am committed to transparency and collaboration in working with parents, staff, and fellow board members to achieve that goal.

For a STRONG school board, vote Ilene STRONG

WINNER

I received 49.88% of the votes which makes me eligible to run in the general election on November 4 to determine the ultimate winner of the Lake Mountain School Board Seat 4. Elections are not over yet, we are half way there.

It is very humbling to see your name on the ballot and ask others to believe in you, and vote for you. Thank you to those who have been so positive and given words and actions of support. It is truly appreciated and I express my sincere gratitude. Thank you for spreading the word and putting signs in your yard. Your efforts made all the difference.

I look forward to hearing from voters on how we can build the best new district. We are in this together where all voices are welcomed, heard, and considered for our children and the future of our schools.

As a school board member I contribute many years of experience and wear many different hats.

Principal Hat

I want to put on my PRINCIPAL HAT and express my views about Special Education. Special Education requirements fall under federal law in the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). Once an Individual Education Plan (IEP) or 504 is written for a student, it follows the student anywhere in the United States. As a past principal, I was the case manager for hundreds of IEPs and 504s. I often observed with amazement how parents, psychologist, and educators came together to find the best solutions for students. I love how creative and innovative the process can be when the best minds come together to help students. Special Education is vital in our schools and I support helping students thrive in their development process.*

Teacher Hat

I want to put on my TEACHER HAT and express my views about our outstanding teachers. I taught first and fifth grades in Alpine School District so I know from first-hand experience the talent and stamina required to show up each day prepared. I worked alongside a team of teachers who collaborated together and were vulnerable enough to share data about how their students were doing. I sat around the table with teacher teams at professional development discussing ways each one of us could put our best foot forward for students. As a principal I had the privilege of evaluating teachers. This gave me a chance to go into classrooms and observe their teaching. I was continually amazed at the abilities and talents of our teachers. They are masters at knowing how each student in their classroom is progressing, meeting their needs, and helping them thrive. Thank you to all our teachers who put their whole heart and sole into their job. I know you put in many hours outside your contract. As a school board member I commit to looking for ways to support and strengthen our teachers because I know how it is, I was in the classroom myself.*

Mom Hat

I want to put on my Mom hat and express my views on Moms in education.

Once, as a mom, I needed to go see the principal to discuss a concern I had about one of my children.  I was so scared to go.  I worried I wouldn't say the right thing to express my concern.  I fretted and got anxiety for days before I finally made an appointment.  Remembering those anxious feelings is so engrained in my memory that when I became a principal I could empathize with parents who came to see me. I was sincere in wanting to help them feel at ease in my office.  I knew it took a lot of courage for them to come see me as their principal.  As a school board member I would hope the moms and dads of our district would find it comfortable to approach me about their ideas, concerns and issues.  I've been there.

Student Hat

I want to put on my STUDENT HAT and express my views about students.  Students are the whole reason we have schools.  The buildings were primarily built for students to learn, and secondly for adults to have a place to work.  When I was a principal I had a saying on my desk which stated, "Children have only one childhood."  This saying was my constant reminder that I was a part of a child's one and only childhood, so I should do my part to help make it their best. A joyous part of my day was observing children helping each other.  It made me smile to watch siblings walk each other into the building in the morning and hug as they parted to class.  I loved it when a child learned something new and felt so grown up.  Holidays are bright through the eyes of a child, especially a child's birthday.  Children are our future and our teachers and staff strive everyday to help them obtain their best life.  Everything we do in a school is for the betterment of the students, and the more a school can support the adults in the building, the better it is for the student. Students come from all backgrounds and are at different levels of learning and development.  Our whole effort is to meet all students where they are and take them to the next level.*

Staff Hat

Behind the students, teachers and principals at a school there is an army of STAFF members working tirelessly behind the scenes and making the school great.  Our counselors, psychologists, office staff, librarians, nurses, technology support, coaches, classroom aides, recess and lunchroom aides, nutrition workers, custodian, sweepers, resource officers, bus drivers, and supervision support are rock stars. There are almost as many STAFF members as there are teachers and principals.  I myself have worked as a STAFF member and know their vital importance to the school.  I enjoy serving food in the cafeteria, cleaning the building, answering the phone, checking out books, putting on bandaids, calming down students, supervising drop-off and pick-up areas, helping students with classwork, supervising proms and high school ball games, and much more to assist the STAFF. As of today, I haven't driven a bus yet and hope to someday give it a go.  From first-hand experience I know how much a school depends on the STAFF.  Thank you to all the STAFF members in our district.  I support you and will continue to advocate for your positions in our new school district.*

Parent Hat

I want to put on my parent hat and express my views on parents. As a parent myself I know parents are the eyes, ears and voice of the district. They are a vital part of providing information and keeping the school board informed as to what is going on in families and how their children are doing in school. I hope parents always feel like they can come to me and voice their opinion. As a school board member I would be representing thousands of parents in the district. I desire to have as many parents as possible voice their opinion.  When we put many bright minds together, that is when we come up with the best solutions.  The beauty of living in America is we have a process for voicing our opinions and having our elected officers represent us.  My desire is to have parents find me a good listener because that is what I want as a parent also.  We need the eyes, ears, and voice of parents in our new school district.

Neighbor Hat

When my children were in elementary school in a different state, the district proposed a boundary change for a new school that was being built.  Our neighborhood did not like the proposed new boundary for our neighborhood.  A wise school board member gave me the advice that I should not approach the school board to complain, but that I should present a solution to the problem. Our neighborhood banned together to raise our voice with a solution to the problem. We questioned the growth numbers and placement of the school.  We found land to purchase to build the school closer to our neighborhood, fixing the problem of four different elementary school boundaries. The school board voted in our favor but two months later reversed their vote because the school had already begun being built and the district needed the numbers in our neighborhood to attend the new school.  I was upset because of the reversed, last minute vote.  The next morning after the school board meeting I got a phone call from the Superintendent.  He wanted to know if I would share the information I gathered about available land to purchase for a new school.  Four years later they put our solution in place.  Our neighborhood was upset the district did not have the forethought to solve the problem in the first place.  Our children had to move to a new school and four years later return to the one we should have been in all along.  As a school board member with this background, I will listen to solutions to problems parents and staff present.  I will also look deeply into the numbers and solutions presented by the district. *

Voter Hat

I'm a voter just like you.  As voters, we have many choices on who we choose to direct our future.  I hope you find me, Ilene STRONG, your choice for Seat 4 in the new Lake Mountain School District. For a STRONG School Board vote Ilene STRONG.

Student

During August, I put on my student hat and attended BYU Education Week. This conference is all about the student/learner/participant. While there were procedures and logistics (enter and exit certain doors, silence cell phones, no eating in classrooms, etc.), there was also autonomy (choose classes from a well-organized brochure, sufficient time between classes to pass, quick and easy assess to delicious food, etc) all with the student in mind. The instructors were highly qualified and engaging. I was motivated, challenged, safe, comfortable, and inspired to become better at my level. Learning was fun.

This is what I want for Lake Mountain School District.  I want to start each idea or decision with the student in mind, and then build everything else from that perspective. I know as a student myself that is what kept me engaged and learning, and that is what I want for all our students.*

Buses

I would like to put on my school bus hat and discuss buses not because I am a bus driver, but because I have had experience with the bus.  As a mother I waited at bus stops and put my children on the bus.  At first it was one of the hardest things I did to put my child in the vehicle of another human I did not know, and trust he/she would be taken care of and arrive safely at school.  I find that many bus drivers I have interacted with over the years have been very good at their job.  I appreciate anyone who gets behind the wheel of a huge vehicle, maneuvers that vehicle, handle all the students, and arrives at their destination in safety.  As a principal I rode the bus during the first weeks of school with the kindergarteners to make sure those students arrived in safety, got off at the right bus stop, and were received into the arms of their loved ones.  I also rode the bus when problems were reported or when extra help was needed. Thank goodness for video cameras on the bus.  One time I waited hours with a school bus driver on the side of a mountain until law enforcement could assess the damage to her bus caused by a reckless teenage driver who ran into the side of her bus while driving students to Clear Creek.  The bus driver was found to be innocent of any wrongdoing caused by the accident.  She was brave.  Our school bus drivers are safe, courageous and kind. I appreciate and support all they do for our District. *

Growth

We feel growth in our area closing in on us from all sides; as we sit in traffic, wait in stores, and drop-off and pick-up our children from school, just to name a few.  I loved moving into Eagle Mountain in 2010 and being a part of this great community.  Some could say my moving here added to the growth problem because we were new, which is true,  So, I can't really complain about growth because at one time I added to it.  Growth is going to be part of our lives as long as we live in this high growth area.

It is very important the cities and school district work together as we tackle the discomforts of growth that we all contributed to when we moved here.  We need to be forward thinking and realistic as to what to build as we grow, while at the same time be careful to not overbuild and get ahead of ourselves. There is a good balance that can be fostered as schools and cities work together. The tax dollars to operate a city and school district come from the same citizens. We should work together to make every dollar count for our future.

Parent

My praise goes out to parents with much admiration and appreciation for all you do for your children. I do not currently have school children in my home, but I once did.  It is a very busy and stressful time of life.  It is also a very growing and learning time of life.  Parents have jobs, maintain homes, juggle schedules, and meet demands.  They know what is best for their children and strive to make their lives peaceful and fulfilling.  As a school board member I will value the opinions and desires of parents.  I will strive to say, "yes" more than I say, "no" for therein lies a push forward to better ideas and solutions to problems.  Let's come together as parents to make getting an education in Lake Mountain School District a top notch experience.*

Why I Want to be on the Lake Mountain School Board

(Official name to be determined)

The educating of our children in the next generation is crucial to the advancement of a society.  Imagine a world where the adults did not value the education of children. Helping students feel safe and happy at school, while thriving is of utmost importance to me.

Education has been very good to me throughout my life.  My own education was a place where I thrived academically and socially.  In my later life it opened doors of opportunity I never would have gotten otherwise. I want to give back to education what has been so freely given to me.

I bring valuable experience to the new Lake MountainSchool Board:

 >I understand students, parents, teachers, administrators, and staff because I have walked the path of each of them;

>I have spent considerable years living school policy, budgets, and helping students, parents and teachers thrive in the classroom.

>I am retired so I have time to stay on top of issues, concerns, and events.

I know many of the teachers, administrators, and staff members on a personal level currently employed in the schools on the west side of Alpine School District. The new Lake Mountain District is going to be an outstanding district in the State of Utah.  I believe my talents and experiences will be valuable in getting it started on the right path.

Priorities for the soon to be created Lake Mountain School District

(Official name to be determined)

School Employees

Of high priority is ensuring the new   Lake Mountain School District remains competitive with the surrounding districts so we attract high quality teachers, administration and staff members to work with our students.

District Split Fairness

The greatest need in the new Lake Mountain District is splitting up Alpine School District's assets and resources equitably and ensuring the Lake Mountain District is treated fairly.

Growth

As our new Lake Mountain District, and especially the District 4 area, continues to grow, there is a need to continually look at building the necessary campuses to accommodate growth.

Why vote for Ilene Strong?

My experience and background as a teacher and administrator in Alpine School District gives me a unique perspective in making decisions for the future of the new Lake Mountain District and especially in representing District 4 within that district.  My personal relationships with many teachers, staff members, and administrators gives me a first-hand view to the pulse happening with the district split and the concerns of the employees.  I have worked within the bounds of school policy and district budgets giving me a deep level of understanding in the backbone of school and curriculum decisions.  I look forward to collaborating with other school board members to set the vision for our new district.  As we look at data and discuss goals, we will set our students and employees on the best path to a bright future.

“Ilene Strong's decision to run for school board in Seat 4 is the best news for our newly created Lake Mountain District.  She is exactly what we need on the board.

Thank you, Thank you, Thank you Ilene Strong."
